So you think it’s time to try counseling. What can you expect?
The work
It starts with our partnership
Counseling is a collaboration. I may know about the counseling stuff, but you are the expert in your life.
Together we create a space where you feel heard and understood, a place where you can say the things you struggle to admit to yourself, much less others.
An hour of radical empathy
You deserve to be accepted for who you are. You deserve to know why you do things, and how to live in harmony with your values.
Acceptance starts here, in session. It’s a proactive practice, a hopeful and self-affirming series of ongoing choices to be open to new ideas, new habits, and new ways of interacting with the world.
Building trust through honesty
These values reinforce each other. Progress depends on sharing our honest experiences of each other. An hour a week where you are able to focus on yourself and be listened to by someone you trust.
This work isn’t always fun, but it can be pretty funny. Sometimes nothing is as funny as the truth, and we laugh as often as we cry.
New coping and communication skills
I tend to work with Cognitive Behavioral, Acceptance and Commitment, and Emotionally Focused tools. Don’t know what those are? Fine, because it’s not that important.
The tools are always dependent on your needs in the moment. We will work to understand your experience of life, your strengths, your patterns, and your goals.
My story
I love this work because I believe everyone’s story is unique and worthy of attention. You deserve to be heard and understood, and you deserve to embrace and love your authentic self, warts and all.
My life has not gone in a straight line - I bet yours hasn’t either. A lifetime of not always getting things right has taught me humility and empathy and has made me a hard worker and a creative problem solver. These traits are put into practice while I try to get things right the second (or third or fourth) time in my personal life. I believe we are all trying our best, and the wisdom comes from the insights gained from the “trying” part, not the “accomplishing” part. I’m over here working on myself too!
This is a late-in-life career change - I spent the first half of my life in the business world while building a family. I went back to graduate school to earn a Master’s in Mental Health Counseling at Adams State in Colorado to learn more about myself and give back to my community in midlife. During my practical training I worked with teens, adults, couples and families at two nonprofit agencies in the Dallas area. I am now an LPC-A in Texas hoping to serve neighbors who are struggling to afford care.
In my free time I am a big reader and traveler and I enjoy hiking and skiing. I spend as much time with my family as I can. I’m a fourth-generation Dallasite who has a deep connection to our community institutions.
